The name “Poring” comes from the local Kadazan-dusun language, meaning bamboo, a nod to the abundant bamboo species in the area. When Kinabalu Park was gazetted as a national park in 1964, its vast 750 square kilometers (300 square miles) area included the Poring Hot Spring enclave, recognizing its ecological and cultural value.
